Instructions are horrible, Youtube it!
I already have the API master test kit, so I guess I was expecting something similar. However, there was no booklet, no color chart, only a sheet of microscopic instructions in like 17 languages. A quick Youtube search showed me how the kit works and I was on my way. Overall a good kit, just REALLY poor instructions.

Such an awesome device
What an incredible device for piece of mind. Extremely accurate, and easy to use. I'd recommend using a youtube video for initial set-up, because the provided instructions leave a bit to be desired. But overall, incredible, accurate product.

Works fine. You have to know that the GH test has 2 colors, an initial one and the trigger one.
This test works good once you're used to it. A single drop one with a color sheet might be easier to use, but this is more accurate. You just need to know how to catch the color change, which really isn't hard once you're aware of it. One complaint I see here is that the GH test was green from the get-to. I think that is because their water was just that soft. I used this test to guide my water changes. I have very hard water at home and this helps me blend tap and RO water to keep it in a good band. 4 drops, shake and it is yellow. Another drop, and if it is still yellow, another drop and if it turns green, then I'm at 6% which is about 100ppm, my target. I keep counting higher to get the final number and this means I'll be adding mostly RO water at the next water change. My combo test strips are useless on GH. They always read way higher than actual.

Works as intended
Remember to accurately count the drops. Instructions can be a bit confusing. Both Kh and GH drops are counted to the number of drops to the second color. Ex: GH - 1st drop turns the water to orange. Count the drops until it turns green. Simply count the drops until it turns green.

Works OK, but I need more...
The default measurement scale with this kit is one drop of reagent equals 1 degree of Carbonate Hardness on the German scale, expressed as 1dKH. One dKH is defined as 17.86 milligrams (mg) of calcium/magnesium carbonate per litre of water (17.86 mg/L) which is the same as 17.86 ppm (per Wikipedia and other online sources). For my purposes (fine tuning mineral content of craft water) using the dKH scale is too coarse; I prefer ppm as a more modern, more common, and more pertinent standard. That means I have to use a calculator/spreadsheet everytime, for every reading, to convert to ppm and make a log entry. This is adequate as an emergency backup to a primary, regular-use, meter with, at least, 1 ppm resolution. It is also adequate if ppm resolution is not an issue and dKH is good enough, as in aquariums, koi ponds, or aquatic plants. Three stars because it's fine for many users but not for others who, like me, need more.

A great test kit to have!
I ordered this test kit after moving from using well water to city water. My aquarium plants were suffering and I noticed my snail's shells were looking a little pale (their new growth), so I was able to get even more readings on the new tap water and can monitor my tank. Having to find a new balance all over again, this has helped tremendously! This gives me accurate readings in a simple and easy way.

The easiest of all the water tests
Some may disagree however, no color cards to squint at and very simple directions. Drops put in one at a time and counted give the dKH reading. Simple.

Essential tests that should be included in the Master Test Kit
These should be included in the ‘Master Test Kit’ as standard, as they are an essential test but they are not in the kit. I initially thought that there should have been a colour chart included, like the other API tests, however these work by counting the drops until the colour changes. KH - Blue -> Yellow GH - Orange -> Green This includes two extra test tubes which is handy it’s just a shame there isn’t space to store it all in the Master Test Kit box.

Fiddly to use, but appear accurate and easy to read
We use rain water for replacing the water in our aquariums, which naturally is very clear unlike our tap water at times. One problem however is that rain water lacks nutrients and carbonate hardness, so I need to add supplements. This GH and KH kit lets me keep an eye on these levels. The kit includes two bottles and two test tubes with caps. At a first glance it appears simple to use, i.e. with a 5ml sample in the test tube, add a drop of solution, cap and shake, then repeat until the colour changes. In reality, the cap is very stiff to place on the test tube. After repeating the steps a few times, some liquid ran down the outside of the test tube and as I tried capping it, it slipped from my fingers, flew across the table and smashed on the floor. Once I managed to test the KH and GP and using a paper towel to dry the test tubes before capping after each drop, the test reading itself is very simple - The colour changes from blue to yellow for the KH reading or from green to yellow for the GH reading. It includes a chart that shows the readings for the number of drops added. Personally I would prefer if it included a bung instead of a cap as it is quite tedious trying to pull off and replace the stiff cap after each drop, particularly when it can take 6 to 9 drops to complete each test. The guide mentions that the bottles must be held vertically upside down for accuracy, so I'm not sure about the accuracy with being unable to fully invert the bottle without it releasing multiple drops. With other test kits, I need to squeeze the bottle to release drops, where as the bottles with this kit starts releasing drops before it is fully inverted. There is also a warning to wear protective gloves, protective clothing, eye protection and face protection and to only use outdoors or in a well-ventilated area.

Great unless you need to test for very soft (<1 kH) water
This is excellent if your kH is at or above 1, and you only need an approximate idea of your kH. For most tropical fishkeepers, that's more than enough information. It's ridiculously easy to use, although it can be tricky to see the result if your kH/gH is under about 3, as the colour is so faint. Two tips: 1) Stand the tube on a piece of white paper, look down the test tube. It makes it much easier to see the colour 2) If you can't tell whether the kH test is yellow or blue, it's yellow. In good light, the Blue is fairly obvious even after one drop, while the yellow still looks transparent. If you want a blackwater biotope with a <1 kH, but maintaining the presence of carbonates, there are other products which are better for you. Similarly if you want to know the kH with greater accuracy (ie to greater than an accuracy of 17ppm-ish or 1 degree kH).

Easy and fun to use hardness test.
I've found this test to be easy to use and it is fun observing the colour changes. My tapwater and most clean local water sources seem to be rather hard at 10 degrees GH. I am using collected rainwater (measuring under 2 degrees GH) to dilute my tapwater and bring the hardness down. I did ask a friend to bring me water in a container as his water is soft at 3 degrees GH. However the pH of his water is high at 7.8 and as my fish prefer soft acid conditions I think a pH of 7.8 may be undesirable. I'm unsure why I should measure KH as well but I have done so for completeness and this test is just as simple.

GH & KH Testing made easy
This is a first class product backed by a first rate supplier. I have been using Tetra 6in1 test strips and have found it almost impossible to get reliable readings, no problems now, API GH & KH Test kit is brilliant. It is easy to use, clear concise instructions that are easy to follow and best of all clear reliable results. If you can count to twenty without forgetting where you are you are qualified to use this product. A tip for those who lose their way in sheets of multi-language instructions, just cut the English instructions out with a pair of scissors, the results chart will then be on the back of the strip you have cut out and from there on it is plain sailing. Highly recommended product.
