So grateful for this!
This was a smart buy for our home use. We struggle so much with the upkeep of a standard can opener, from it rusting so rapidly to the difficulty of using it. But this particular opener is easy and works a lot better. Strongly would advise to invest in purchasing one you will not be disappointed.

Why I Love This Opener
My wife and I find this to be the best can opener we have ever used; we even use it to open cans that have lift top lids (such as Del Monte canned sliced peaches). Why this can opener is so good is because of how it works and the quality of the product. It is made like a Swiss watch; there is no slop in the movement. It is different than a traditional can opener which you place along the side of the can top and it cuts off the top. This can opener you place on top of the can and it separates the top of the can from the can cylinder. Contrary to the language used in the Amazon review, the can opener does not depend on cutting. The Kuhn Rikon Safety Lid Lifter depends on breaking the seal between the lid and the can. The knob that you turn rotates a knurled wheel. When pinched on a can, it is forced into contact with the inside edge of the can lid. The wheel of the can opener that is on the outside is set at a slight angle that causes a lifting action to break the bond between the can and the lid. Initially, you turn the knob clockwise; when the opener has gone completely around the top of the can and you detect a drop in force, you then turn the knob counter-clockwise and the lid lifts away from the can. Typically, there are no sharp edges because nothing has been cut. If you want to see a good picture of the mechanism, look at the lower price model. To see this, click on other products by Kuhn Rikon. You will be able to go to a picture that shows the opening mechanism and will see the very slight angle on the wheel opposite the drive wheel. This wheel does all the magic. Because of my fascination with this can opener, I have examined a lot of cans that were opened with this opener. Only one time I found a sharp point that must have occured when the lid did not properly separate from the cylinder. The drawbacks: There are some cans with pull top lids that this opener will not open but these are few. I notice in some reviews people talk about sliver pieces and I have seen this. What I believe they see is a small particle of the glue ring that seals the top of the can to the cylinder in the assembly process. It takes getting used to: When you place the can opener on top of the can, it must lay flat. Once you get used to it, you automatically push down lightly on the turning knob as you close the grips. This assures that the can opener is laying flat on top of the can. The can opener is designed for use by right handed people. To operate this opener, you need to be able to position the can opener on the can with your left hand and hold it there while turning the knob with your right hand. If you can't do that, you probably don't want this can opener.

FLIPPIN' MY LIDS FOR 11 YEARS... AND STILL GOING STRONG!
You sometimes read a product praised as "The last you'll ever need to buy." Well, in the case of this Kuhn Rikon safety can opener, that just may be true! It occurred to me recently that I've had mine for a while and it has always worked flawlessly... but even I was shocked when I checked my Amazon orders and discovered I bought it in 2010! In fact, after all this time I only have one caveat: if you haven't used a safety opener like this type before, it may take a bit of practice to get the hang of how it fits to a lid. I've had very smart people in my kitchen looking absolutely befuddled when they pick this up and not have a clue about how to use it. But once you get the hang, you'll wonder how something this easy took any time at all--it practically jumps on the lid itself. Last but not least, the way it lifts lids with so little effort and no sharp edges left behind is practically a magic trick. I still get impressed! Back in 2010, this cost me $20, so it's up a little in price since then--but any kitchen tool still going strong after more than a decade has easily earned its keep! Excellent performance, elegant can opeing made simple
Wow. I have gone through numerous "can openers" over the years. From the cheap to the expensive but they were all the standard lid cutting type. As we get older my wife has a harder time using the lid cutting openers, and they seem to quickly lose their ability to grip can edges and cut cleanly. Out of frustration I figured I would try out an alternate approach to opening cans and bough this Kuhn Rikon opener. Wow, again! I think some of the negative reviews are based on trying to use it like the lid cutters. You are supposed to put the device on the TOP of the can and it rotates around the lid rim. It appears to push in the can side as it goes around thus breaking the seal between the lid and the can. You then release it and use the little jaws on the edge of it to lift the loose lid from the can. Do not try to use it on the side of the can like the old style. I suspect those who got "slivers of metal" or found it difficult to turn did it the wrong way. Used properly, this opener never cuts or shears anything, it is impossible to create slivers of metal. All it does is unseal the lid from the can and lift it off: no cutting, no puncturing, no shearing. Yes, some cans have white gooey stuff when the lid is lifted. Most do not. I changed brands of canned goods in that case. This opener is very easy to use and 10x less effort than lid cutter style openers. Really easy and the lid simply lifts off, no sharp edges on the can OR the lid. Plus, the opener never touches the food so no need to run it through the dishwasher and get rusty. I have totally had it with the cutter style openers. Never again except for my trusty P-38 or Swiss Army Knife openers for camping. For the kitchen, the Kuhn Rikon rules all cans.

Very polished product - top marks in all categories
The Kuhn Rikon 2272 Safety Opener, works very, very well. This was a replacement for another top-brand safety opener we had for about 5 years, and the Kuhn Rikon is superior in the ease of use, as less effort is required to turn the handle. In addition, a big surprise is that the lid lifter actually works very well. Our previous safety opener did not have this feature and I must say it is very appreciated on the Kuhn Rikon. Highly recommend this product.

I LIKE it!
We have had this for months maybe even over a year. It has held up well. I had to read the instructions to understand how to use it at first, as it is not like any can opener we have used before. I am RIGHT-handed and find it easy to turn the knob. I now look for the UPC on all my labels to use as a starting point of reference so I don't double cut an area of a tin can. Most cans it is easy to tell simply by the feel when I have cut all the way around the tin, but every once in a while I get a can that is maybe thicker or has more glaze on the outside or something and it isn't as obvious so paying attention to where I started is helpful. I like that the gears don't seem to come in contact with the food contents of the cans and thus don't get gummed up with the food like my other manual can openers. I would recommend this Kuhn Rikon 2272 manual can opener. And would purchase again to give as a gift.
