Not bad for the money
I guess this product is about what I would expect a $35 rock tumbler would be. It does work and is providing a great and fun learning experience with the kids but doesn’t compare to more expensive models from Lortone or Chicago Electric that I have tried. What I do really like is that this kit came with everything we needed from start to finish. The only issues that I ran into using it were that the barrel on mine doesn’t seal properly (tried both of the supplied O-rings) so there was always a little leakage when we started but the grit seems to do a good job at plugging the leak before too much liquid gets out. It also makes a significant amount of noise during operation so you want to make sure that you have a good place to operate it. We used the garage and though you could hear it running outside with the garage door closed you couldn’t hear it in the bedrooms (thank goodness!). The other tumblers that I have tried were much quieter probably largely due to the rubber barrel as opposed to the hard plastic barrel on this one. I also had to score the surface of the ring that makes contact with the drive shaft in order to get enough friction to actually turn the barrel. It wasn’t a big deal but it was a little annoying when we first put the barrel on and it wouldn’t turn because it kept slipping. Overall it has been a fun experience for the family. Update: After using this machine for a few months I would like to add a few additional experiences. First, this unit is fairly loud during operation. It is so loud that we had to turn it off during the night because family members were complaining. We had it set up in the garage on the opposite side of the house from the bedrooms and could still hear it. I also had a problem with the rubber ring that turns the barrel. Over time the ring came loose and the barrel could no longer get traction resulting in no tumbling action. I was able to glue back in place without much effort. Still it seems like it should be designed a little better. The hard plastic of the barrel easily can be scored by the course grit making it difficult to clean before running finer grits. There is definitely a tendency for the barrel to leak causing a bit of a mess during operation.

Good for kids, more as a novelty rock tumbler
My 5 year old son really wanted a rock tumbler for Christmas for whatever reason and I refused to pay $100 for a good quality one, so I knew what I was getting into with this. When I first went to start it up, it didn't work at all. My mom, a former electrician, fumbled with it for a while and somehow got it working (I wasn't watching so I didn't see what she did). It works now though and does the job. The rocks that it comes with are just that. There are a few, maybe 2 or 3, that changed color however they are much smaller than the other rocks, so during the 2nd stage of the tumbling process, the bigger rocks broke the smaller rocks and this very much upset my son (which of course just annoyed me). I ended up taking out the remnants of the prettier rocks before stage 3 as to not have them get any smaller, so they didn't even get to the polish stage. If you aren't familiar with rock tumbling at all, BE FOREWARNED: THE ENTIRE PROCESS TAKES ABOUT A MONTH! If you have a child that is looking for a quick process, this is probably is not for them. Also, definitely follow the recommendation to put it in a location where you don't go often, like a garage or basement because it is very noisy. Oh, and the "silver" jewelry that it comes with is actually just grey plastic. Kids are still happy with it, but just a heads up so you're not disappointed expecting something nicer.Additionally, this kit comes with one packet of grit for each stage of the rock tumbling process, so basically allowing you to tumble one set of rocks. After that, you need to purchase refills of the grit. In the box comes an order form to order more, however you can order cheaper and with free shipping on amazon. All in all, this is a fine kit for kids if your kids want a rock tumbler and you don't want to invest in a more expensive, better quality one and purchase all of the things individually. It does the job and makes your kids happy.

Good for a starter
This kit only has enough grit for one go-round. They sell grit on amazon or ebay that is a lot cheaper than the refill kits on the order sheet. If this is your first time rock tumbling, read this first. [...] It takes about a month to do the batch. If you're buying this for a kid, they need to be patient and have attention to detail. Detail is the key to getting this to work the way you want. Be aware the rocks are going to end up way smaller than they started. The sludge that comes out is like quick drying cement. Make sure you're not wearing anything you couldn't live without if you spill. Make sure you don't use any house drains for emptying, and that your pets can't get to the sludge. The instructions say to use half of the rocks provided. I used almost all. Removed a few until the barrel could start itself up under the weight. Worked fine with the grit provided. Be sure to do the vegetable oil step. I oiled the O ring for good measure. Be sure to take the O ring out every time when you clean the barrel between steps. The goal is to have zero grains of the previous grit going into the next load. I find it easier to do the vegetable oil before I add the rocks, water, and grit, but you have to be careful not to get any grit in the oil as you pour. The "leaky" lid. Make sure you have the O ring firmly in place. Make sure you do the vegetable oil step and that there's not a speck of grit in the oil. Make sure you twist the lid on tight. Test it by pulling straight up on the lid a little. If it starts coming up, the lid is not locked. There should not be a leak if you follow those steps. I wish they sold sturdier replacement barrels. I bought this to see if I'd like rock tumbling as a hobby. It takes so long, I'm not sure yet. But I don't think the barrel is going to hold up for many loads. I'll be pleasantly surprised if it survives two batches. I'm not going to be doing huge batches, so I'd rather upgrade this one's barrel rather than buying a whole new machine.
