Average for price, not scientific

These worked well as examples for a high school class, however, most of the samples don't match the standard mineral properties such as hardness or specific gravity when actually tested.

Good experiment for our rock & mineral lesson

I homeschool and coming up with science experiments/labs isn't always easy. My 5th and 7th graders are currently studying rocks and minerals, so I thought ordering a mineral science kit would give them a hands-on lesson. I paid less than $10 for the kit and it came with a nail, strike plate, and 15 minerals. The kit also contained a magnifying glass, which as you can see from the photo, is tiny and pretty much useless. There's nothing clear in the magnifying glass - it's just a plastic, blurry lens. The minerals are labeled and can be found with descriptions in the included pamphlet. The booklet that came with the kit is pretty useful as it discusses topics such as luster, mineral hardness, among other things one could benefit in knowing about minerals. I wouldn't say $10 is a bargain, but at the same time, it provided us with a hands-on learning experience. Just make sure you have or buy a magnifying glass so your child/children can examine the rocks up close.

I love it. There's so many cool rocks! My parents, Scott is who orders stuff, and my Mom, are the BOMB when they buy this stuff! I love it all!????????????

Two minerals are missing!

I opened the box to see that minerals #12 and 15 were not in there! Should be biotite and selenite according to the key. Can't imagine why they are not there and why I paid full price?!

The rocks were very small.

A magnifying glass is nessasary. The one included was not adequate. Otherwise I was satisfied with the diversity of minerals.

Not Necessarily Accurate Samples/Labels

This kit works some...our kids are using it to test out their ability to identify minerals based on their characteristics for homeschool. However, not all of the samples seem match what they are supposed to be. Number 4, pyrite, is the most obvious here. I am very familiar with pyrite, but our sample of it is magnetic and black...definitely not pyrite but likely another sample of magnetite. I made a guide for our kids to use to identify the correct minerals based on their characteristics (without them seeing the key that came with), but this is difficult when the samples don't always seem to match what they are supposed to be. I find the size discrepancy between the picture on the box and the actual sample also interesting...the samples included are much smaller than those pictured. We have made this kit work, but the quality and accuracy are definitely questionable.

I bought it for the science project. The pieces are quite tiny. And the price is not reasonable at all

Good for beginners

Really pleased with this set. I am a 70 year old beginner in geology. I purchased this to help me start identifying basic rocks and that has been ideal. Samples are about an inch in size and each has a numbered sticker on it, the number relating to the list of names. The stickers had stayed on through the post but I will probably replace them with small dab of paint or tippex. Good for children or older beginners!
