Perler Bead fun for a next level project

My 8 year old daughter loves Perler Beads and she wanted to try a larger project. This Boston Terrier pattern is adorable and was perfect for her. The package says ages 12+, but she enjoys Perler Beads and this was not too challenging for her. I purchased the additional 4 pack of larger peg boards, which is a requirement for this project. The pattern gets laid underneath the clear peg boards and then you place the Perler Beads accordingly. This turned into a fun family activity, as we had it sitting out on our kitchen table for a few days while we all worked on adding to it. This kit included a tweezers, which was an added bonus and came in handy. I knew the hardest part of this project was going to be the ironing, as my past experience with Perler Beads is that some colors melt faster than others. The hardest parts to iron on this project were where the peg boards joined together because those sections formed a slight dip, forcing me to press the iron a little harder in those sections. As a result, I then ended up melting the other beads around it a little more than others. Overrall, the over-melting only showed on one side of the project. It was also a bit challenging to get all parts to fuse together well, as some colors did melt better than others. I have read other reviews for Perler Bead projects and some suggest purchasing a smaller travel size iron. This may help to avoid over-melting in some sections, as the surface size of the iron is smaller. I also have an iron that has an auto shut-off setting, so about every 30 seconds, I had to stand my iron up and then start ironing the project again because my iron thought I was leaving it laid down for too long (which typically would be a hazard). I would suggest being familiar with your iron settings prior to starting the project to avoid wasted time and frustration, as this does take a bit of time to iron in general. Our package was short on white beads, so luckily we had other sets that we could borrow from, otherwise that would have been frustrating. We had extras of many of the other colors in the pack. Overall, I am pleased with this purchase and would likely purchase another larger Perler project again.

Big, detailed project!

If you're not intimidated by big, time consuming, detailed projects, go for it! This is an adorable picture and I've gone so far as sorting the colors in an organizer but have decided to wait until my children are older before tackling it. It requires 4 of the large interlocking peg boards. I'm not sure I could or would want to complete this in one sitting and feel like it's a mess waiting to happen with 2 small children and animals in the house. It would make a great gift for my niece who loves boston terrier pups!
