2 Important Considerations
First: Know you will need LOTS of room to slide unit onto base once installed. It must be slid on from inboard end, so unless you have lots of room on pontoon deck, good luck! Second: read and re-read ALL instructions before beginning. There are two assembly manuals that seem to contradict themselves. For example: One tells you to drill two 11/32" holes into the top half of the sliding-on mount to have 6 holes total, when in fact the holes are already there; one tells you to attach devise to the 2 holes at the very back of the plate, another shows that it should be mounted farther forward; one says the quick release unit is not sold separately while the other says it is available from any dealer. Figure on a good hour to figure it all out and get the quick release plate and devise connected to each other before even mounting it to the boat. And lastly: what's with the ridiculously short power cord. Plan on having plenty of 10 g wiring on hand to make an extension.

New deckhand 40 won't go down
Update: Support did get back with me and had me take the winch to a authorized tech in town. The tech could find nothing wrong. I've tested it again in the driveway and it is working fine. Can only speculate that there is a bad solder joint on the control board. I've not been able to get it to fail again but I've also not had the boat on the water again. After installation the DH 40 worked fine on the driveway. First time on the water it will not release rope. I traveled with the anchor in the boat so there was about 5' of rope out. Up works fine. Down doesn't work at all. I'm on hold with Minn Kota support now and have been for the last 45 minutes. I attempted chat which displayed "You reached us after hours." It's around noon on Monday their time. Reviews eventually say they get good support. Mine isn't good so far. The "won't go down" problem looks to have been an issue for years without a common solution. I will update this review with my outcome.

I have owned numerous boats and always add 1 of these to the front. It is awesome and lifts a 30 pound anchor no problem

Good Winch for Pontoon.
I use this unit on a 25 foot Tritoon. It works great! Looks to be made of all metal parts (minus the cover). I have used this for the past month or two and it's been very dependable. I use a 30 lb. river mushroom anchor and it keeps us put. I give this a 4/5 because of the installation. (See cons below). The unit itself is very rugged, but installation was not for a beginner. I have a background in engineering and can read a circuit diagram. For that, I cant five it 5. Pro's: * Works Great, no issues keeping us in place or pulling up the anchor * All-metal construction * Stronger winch than competition * Includes remote Con's: * Remote switch is easy to accidentally knock and will stick in the down position. Be careful not to hit it while in motion. * Unit did not come with the proper instructions. They sent mounting instructions for a trolling motor. * Unit was not wired properly. There are about 6 internal wires on the unit and i was displeased to find that they were all attached wrong. I was able to find a wiring diagram online and rewired it to the proper specification. No issues since then. * The wires included with the unit are way too short. 6 ft of electrical cable is not enough to reach the fuse box or rear mounted battery on most pontoons. Shame on you MinnKota. This was supposed to be designed for a pontoon.

The wiring
It said for a pontoon but it said nothing about the extras you needed. Either you add a extra battery or buy wiring the length of your pontoon which they say is not recommended.

Outstanding
One of the best things that I've added to my tritoon so far along with the 40lb anchor. Damn convenient and so much cleaner than pulling the muddy anchor up hand over hand. be sure to think carefully about where you add the switch because it will bumped. After trial and error ended up mounting mine upside down on the front fence.

This product was not the easiest to install, but we did take our time as we wanted to make sure it was functional. After install the product was faulty. We had connection from the battery but apparently the circuit board was faulty as nothing worked at all. I had read the reviews in which several stated they had issues with the circuit board. Had to return product.
