Improved version; Needs better instructions
I have a three-year old model of this stainless steel popper, and after using it many times for making popcorn I re-purposed it for roasting coffee beans (which it does quite well.) When I wanted to start making popcorn again, I wasn't up to the task of cleaning off the baked on residue and oil from dozens of roasts, and I want to continue roasting coffee, so I decided to buy another new one. On unpacking, I noticed immediately that some changes have been made to the design to hold the lid on more securely, which is a good thing, but it also made assembly a bit more difficult. Not a big deal. On the old design, sometimes the lid would shift a bit while cranking but the new one is very solid. My only complaint is about the cooking instructions, which I followed to the letter with disasterous results. The instructions say to "Add ingredients to the popper before placing on your stove..." which was coconut oil (2 Tbs) and popcorn (1/2 cup). I put them on my induction plate, turned it on and started cranking. After a minute or so the popping started, and then clouds of smoke and a strong burning smell. I rushed it outside and after letting things cool down, looked inside to see what had happened. The bottom was covered with burned residue, blackened popcorn and unpopped kernels. I think I understand what happened. My coconut oil was soft, but not melted when I put it in at a room temp of around 70F. My guess is that just enough oil melted to cover the pan, but not enough to properly pop the corn before it started to burn. It burnt what did pop and made a terrible mess on the pan. I scraped and scrubbed the pan and eventually got it reasonably clean, and tried again, but using my tried-and-true method of yore, which is to heat the oil first, and then add the popcorn. It worked perfectly. Bottom line: Love the popper and its new design, but ignore the first step of the instructions. Heat the oil first before adding the popcorn, like every other stove top popcorn recipe suggests. I wonder if lawyers wrote the cooking instructions., not cooks.

EASY TO USE
I was hesitant at first, but it's REALLY easy to use and makes good popcorn. You just dump your ingredients in, give it a couple good stirs, and wait. Once it starts popping good, start stirring and keep stirring until it's done popping. We've had it for 6 months now and use it about once a week. It's held up really well and still works great. The stainless steel outside has held up well and it doesn't take much to clean it. We bought a carton of Flavacol seasoning salt (it doesn't take a lot) and have been using Coconut Oil to pop in. It's so easy to do, and the only way to mess it up is to leave it sitting in the hot pot when it's done. I used Ghee the last time I popped and I didn't like it, so I think we'll be sticking with the coconut oil. 1/2 cup of popcorn, 2 tablespoons of an oil, and a dash or two of Flavacol is all you need. I can't stand to eat the microwave stuff anymore because it tastes fake.

Top notch
I’m finished with microwave popcorn which doesn’t compare to popcorn made on the stove. This is like the old versions I grew up with that you would shake to avoid burning. But this one has it convenient modern way of keeping the corn from burning. I’m going to get another one as a family Christmas gift For my son and his family

REALLY GOOD QUALITY POT
Amazing for popcorn however have to remove a star for the sharp edges on the lid. Have to be careful while cleaning to not cut myself especially with metal.

Heavy!
Works great! Only con is it's heavy to hold while trying to dump out the popcorn. Need two hands to hold but also need help with the lid as it doesn't stay open when tipping the pan.

Makes popcorn worth eating again.
Our son turns three next month. One of his favorite snacks happens to be popcorn and we have been going through a lot of organic microwave popcorn. That product is fairly expensive and while it tastes okay coming right out of the bag, it quickly becomes stale and chewy. So I toyed with making popcorn on the stove-top using a large pan. It came out pretty good, and I might even have been satisfied with making it that way had I used more oil. Instead I used the bear minimum and I think it was still too dry. Also, the kernels did not seem to pop up quite as large and fluffy as I had wanted. The last thing I wanted was another large pot to store. However, I figured I would give this product a "whirl" because of all the glowing reviews and because of the item's description, particularly, "Easy Clean Up: Just wipe with a paper towel and store for later use." (more on that later). Last night the popper arrived, fully assembled with the lid attached. It was actually a little difficult to remove the lid and now I find it is a little difficult reattaching the lid. The metal clips really don't seem like they are a long-term solution to the problem. I think it would improve the design ten fold if they threaded the top of the pot and let the vented lid screw on while still allowing a "trap door" to flip open. I am sure it would add expense but would also make the product last longer and be easier to use. I am a big fan of coconut oil. I am a big fan of popcorn. So I added 1 tablespoon of coconut oil , waited for it to liquify in the pot, added 1/4 cup of popcorn and began turning the handle over medium heat on our gas stove. A few minutes later the popping stopped. I used two oven mitts to lift the pot, open the lid and dump the popcorn into a large bowl. I took the salt grinder and gave 7 or so twists to it, and mixed it up a bit.... and the verdict is... Oh my goodness, this was delicious. It needed no butter because the coconut oil was moist enough (and not too coconutty). My wife, who refused to allow me to buy this popper (because I tend to buy a lot of stuff) took one bite, nodded her head and said, "All right!" I also purchased some "nutritional yeast flakes" because I heard so many people saying that it makes a good flavoring to add to popcorn. I made sure to buy the type that is fortified with Vitamin B12 because I am a vegetarian, as is our son (he is a vegetarian in the sense that he refuses to eat almost all foods with meat just being on the list along with pasta, rice, oatmeal, blah blah blah). So I wiped out the bits of popcorn and made a second batch the same way. Only this time, I transferred the popcorn from a bowl to a 1/2 gallon mason jar and dumped some nutritional yeast flakes in it. Then I shook the jar up to distribute the flakes and put the lid on to see how the popcorn would be the following day. Our son asked for popcorn, then went to the kitchen and took the jar off the counter (note to self: Move Jar out of reach because it is heavy glass!) and brought it to his mom, who gave him a piece to try. (Mistakenly, IMHO, telling him she wanted him to try something -- a mistake because that is a surefire way to get him to say "no thanks", or "NO!" depending on his mood). He said, "mmmm" and then proceeded to eat a whole bowl of it. This is not a ringing endorsement for the popcorn however, as he will eat ANY popcorn, even stale microwave popcorn with no additives -- pure cardboard and inedible by adult human standards. I just thought I 'd add the nutritional yeast angle here because if you have not tried it, but like the "smart food" cheddar popcorn type additions to your food, give this stuff a try. It really is delicious and makes for a nice change of pace. Plus, if you happen to be short of B12 in your diet, this is a tasty way of getting it. So why the four stars? Because "Easy Clean Up: Just wipe with a paper towel and store for later use" as described here on Amazon, is changed to "Wash your popper after every use with warm soapy water to remove foods and oils. Thoroughly dry every part." WTF? I was hoping that the oil would sort of "season" the pan and need not be washed out after every use, followed by a thorough drying. Jeez, man, you sell a product and bill it as basically maintenance free, and then tell me you were full of crap? That is not cool. Not in my book. Am I returning the popper? You'll have to pry it out of my dead kung-fu grip, as the popcorn it makes is da bomb. Bomb! Bomb! Bomba da bomb da bomb. So who gets the movie reference? :) **UPDATE** Okay, I've had the popper for eight years now. And it gets a lot of use. The clips work fine, the lid goes on easy. I have no idea what my problem was 8 years ago, but I love this popper. I never wash it, but the housekeeper does once in a while if I leave it on the stove. I just wipe it out with a paper towel and carry on.

Makes great popcorn. Handle screw keeps coming loose
Best popcorn I’ve ever made. Tip: use coconut oil like the theaters. Problem: the little nut that holds the handle on kept coming loose and falling in the popcorn. I went to the hardware store and got a tiny internal star lock washer and problem is solved. Manufacturer SHOULD provide a lock washer

IMPORTED, POPCORN, GREATNESS!!!
WOW, Just, WOW!!! I've brought a few popper, microwave ones, air ones... This is just WOW!!! I caught out when buying this though, as I didn't notice the import charges, BUT it was worth it!!! My kernels all popped, the popped kernels were all coated with the sweet flavouring I added direct to the oil and kernels!! This is by far the best product I've EVER brought, it will help feed my popcorn addiction, for along time!!!

Pops'em all!
I've had this over a month and used 10 times. This product works very well and cant think of anything bad to say about it. This was doubled boxed so it arrived with no damage. The pot itself is heavy,i was kinda surprised. The top is well made but it wont likely last well if you treat it badly. The top[lid] has a metal "buckle" type strap along with a "pin" that fits into a hole on the pot, this keeps the lid strapped on good, but theres also 2 flaps that have metal clips that snug over side of pot,and they keep those flaps down tight, opening either of them is how you get your popcorn, and theres little wooden knobs so you dont burn yourself.........if you do open BOTH after popping to let out additional steam, dont forget to close one or popcorn will be on floor, guilty 2that one! I dont turn the handle constantly,i dont think you gotta, just use common sense, also the more popcorn you put in the least likely you will be able to turn the handle towards the end of the popping,i suggest you dont try forcing it because once you get so much popcorn you wont be able to turn handle, and i dont see that as a problem. With a little more then 3/4 cup of popcorn in pot,at end you will find it hard/not possible to turn handle,at just over 1/4 cup popcorn you can turn handle to very end.....I'm a guy,so i pop once and if i cant turn handle,i move pot around abit on stove element to finish any further popping,in almost all cases theres usually never any unpopped ones.I base this on a element stove at a #6 setting, although you could use higher temp or lower. The metal gears that work the stir rod are good,i actually held back from buying a stovetop popper because i heard some horror stories, but these gears are good, but if you try to force turn the handle once the popper is full of popped popcorn then i would say then this might not last.Cleaning is easy, and it goes back together easy, thats 2 pieces[pot and top]. My other popper is a BettyCrocker movienite,it makes good popcorn too,but it spits out LOTS of unpopped corn,so this GreatNorthern popper does a much better job!

Stove Popping 5*
I had tried bags, the kitchen pot, the Air machine, and even microwave silicon. The results were: "not too bad" - too bad. Well, while edible they really had huge differences in popped kernels. And I wanted to make and taste mushroom popcorn. So I bought the Great Northern Stovetop Popcorn Popper. The Popper is beautiful. All shiny stainless. Putting it together is a breeze. Please look for the small screw that holds the handle to the top of the popper. It is very small in a bag. This is crucial in the handling of the handle. Yesterday, was the trial run. Used Coconut oil, 1 large tablespoon. 4 teaspoons of Blue Kernels. In less than 4 minutes... all had popped! They were twice the size of "micro-wave" ones. Had less "debris" than the air-popped. And the taste is a "Hit". So so good. Nothing like anything I have had. I HIGHLY recommend investing in this stovetop popper. No more wasting or unsatisfactory popcorn. BEST I EVER HAD.

It is a very good product does what it says
It is a very good product does what it says, but I am a bit disappointed. I ordered it seeing it was stainless steel as I would like to have used with an induction stove but it is NOT INDUCTION FRIENDLY. Agreed it is made of stainless steel, but it is pure stainless steel, that ought to be good & it is very good but unfortunately not for an induction stove, apparently for stainless steel to be induction friendly it has to have some iron or steel or any ferrous metal in the composition of the final material. My fault I ought to have asked the seller before I bought it but he was kind enough to refund me 10 % of my money back. That is the reason I am giving it a three star rating. Beji deboo
