Easy to See, Easy to Use, Nice Looking, Beauty is in the Eye of the Beholder

I got this watch today, and I'd guess this is about my fifth or sixth digital watch purchase. My old watch needed a new band, and then the battery died. With the cost of repairs vs. new, that is the signal for me to chunk it and get a new one. After much searching and comparing, I ordered this watch on a Monday, by Thursday it still "being prepared for shipping" by Amazon and I was getting antsy. One thing that concerned me was that it was much bigger than any of my previous watches and I wasn't sure I'd be able to get used to it or ever like it. A short search showed me that this same model watch was in stock at the Sports Authority near me, I had an errand that was taking me right by there, so I stopped in to see it in person. I was first struck by how BIG it was, this was going to be like wearing a clock on my arm. Hmmm. Second impression was that it was a nice looking little clock. Third impression was that the orange accent color was much brighter than in the online photo. As I compared it to the other watches on display I circled back to this model as having the looks and features that appealed to me. As the store price was nearly double the Amazon price, I elected to wait for my order, so walked out feeling a bit more patient. It arrived here on Saturday via USPS- (how did it get from Indiana to Georgia in under 48 hours by the postal system)? Anyway, I opened the package and did not have a shock at what I saw- still big and bright orange, but once on my arm it didn't seem so jumbo, and it is not heavy. One thing that does concern me is wearing long sleeve shirts- I doubt the cuff will fit over this watch. Likes: the display has all the information I wanted- day of the week, month and date, seconds, and with the time nice and large. I like having a countdown timer on my wrist- I use it for a lot of things, e.g. when making bread, when the dough should be ready to bake without having to listen for the kitchen timer. The price- not being very expensive, I can wear this watch all the time without worrying about protecting it. The looks- for whatever reason, I think this is a nice looking watch, kind of in your face, but kind of tasteful at the same time. The cons: I guess you can't have a big display without a big face, but I'm pretty sure if they wanted to this watch could have been smaller without sacrificing anything. I can't see wearing this watch on dress occasions. The little blinky square of dots is pointless, perhaps even kind of goofy. Putting compass points on the bezel is pointless. lol FWIW, mine came with the instructions packed inside an aptitude test: the clear plastic container they were inside had two tabs labeled "squeeze". That is a red herring, the cap pulls off one side to open it.

Best men's digital watch under $30

The Armitron Men's 40/8254ORG Black Strap Orange Accented Digital Chronograph Sport Watch is one of the best looking digital watches around and is probably the best looking digital watch that Armitron has ever made. Under $30, the only men's digital watch that looks better is theU.S. Polo Assn. Men's US9219 Black Silicone Digital Watch , but the Polo watch is not water resistant and has uneven workmanship. For less than 30 bucks, the Armitron is probably the best overall digital watch you can buy for a man. The Armitron borrows styling cues from Casio Pathfinder and Suunto watches. The round case and large display is reminiscent of Suunto, while the rugged case details are similar to Casio Pathfinders. The watch is water resistant to 100 meters. The stainless steel watch back, held in place by six screws, states that the case is acrylic. The plastic watch band is soft and comfortable. The watch itself is very large with a big, bright, very visible display. However, the watch is lightweight and easy to wear. The watch face is very easy to read thanks to its large digits and high contrast. The time is visible in all modes. The large buttons are easy to press and the case has protrusions underneath the buttons to reduce accidental activations. The EL backlight illuminates the digits and is very clean, even and effective. The light stays on for about three seconds when you tap the lower-right button. The watch displays time, seconds, day, month and date all at once along with a small animated area. I like having all of this information visible at the same time. Pressing the upper-right button switches between AM/PM and military time. The watch features a stopwatch, timer, second time zone, five alarms and a pacer. The stopwatch does not support lap times and the timer, unlike other Armitron watches, does not count up after the timer has expired -- all timers should count up after the timer expires so that the user can know how late they are and how much total time has elapsed. The watch does not support world time. The watch has a nicely implemented unidirectional compass bezel. However, the watch does not have an internal compass. Armitron could substantially and inexpensively improve the watch by adding an electronic compass, world time, lap times and a timer that counts up after the timer expires. Armitron should also provide different watch variations in this case style (e.g. analog/digital). All in all, this is the best men's digital watch under $30 that I have found.

Four years of good service

I bought this in 2015 and this morning, as I was changing to daylight savings time, it went completely blank; not a bad run for the money. During that time I used this as my everyday watch and the dual time function was particularly helpful as I traveled to other time zones and internationally. I could easily switch views from the main display to the second time display without having to change the time before and after my trips. I never used the other functions, with the exception of the countdown timer, which I did use once. I got the one with the orange outline and it was a very bright color. The strap held up well. This was a thicker watch that I was used to but it was not heavy. Given the price, it is really not worth getting a new battery and going through the hassle of replacing it; I don't even know if that is possible. Instead, I will buy another one as a replacement, but I think this time I'm going with the black model. --------------- Update on the black model: I returned the black model of this watch. It was very difficult to read the time, with grey numbers on a black background. Even using the light function didn't help and even in daylight I could not make out clearly what time it was. Disappointing. I would rate the black model 2/5 but I won't change this rating, as it was for good service from the orange model.

Reversed Colors

The watch is great. Stylish. Lots of features. But I was surprised by the black background and clear numbers. It’s a little difficult to read.

Good purchase

Very nice watch. All the functions work properly (alarm, stopwatch, etc.) and it's lightweight for its size. I haven't tested to see if it's really water proof (should be 330FT resistant) but for the price it's more than worth it. The only negative (a small one at that) would be that the belt is just a tad rigid.

Muy buen reloj distinto a la media

Buen reloj, muy interesante, el empaque como llegó solo (en una bolsa) venía con la caja abollada, el producto en perfecto estado, en cuanto a estética es un reloj grande ya para ser usado por adolescentes o mayores, tiene particularidades interesantes, la primera es que puede usarse en la aventura o en la chamba, parece más de uso rudo, sus números son grandes y de aquí paso a su funcionamiento y su visibilidad, su fondo es oscuro lo cual lo hace muy práctico y nítido para verlo al sol, a la sombra tiene una lectura buena, regular y en lo oscuro es sentido común que se ve con su iluminación la cual es tenue pero suficiente, por el precio tiene muchas más ventajas que desventajas, tiene funciones básicas como alarma, cronómetro, temporizador regresivo y hora alterna, físicamente tiene corona giratoria para orientarse con respecto al note, ideal para scouts (no trae brujula, no se confundan) en lo general es un reloj diferente a la media, elegante y apto para durar, ya veremos con los meses. Es difícil encontrar un reloj con personalidad propia y éste la tiene. Es resistente al agua, lo tuve sumergido unos minutos y como si nada.

Reloj que cumple

Este reloj ha salido Bueno, Bonito y en especial Barato, si no fuera por la 3ra "B", definitivamente no lo hubiera comprado, pero por los 198 pesos que pagué por él vale la pena. Sus funciones son las básicas de cualquier reloj, su visibilidad como lo dicen otros comentarios es en realidad mínima, pero solo basta con mover un poco la muñeca de ángulo para visualizar la hora, la luz funciona muy bien, y es resistente al agua, además la batería le deberá durar mucho tiempo dado la poca energía que gasta, estéticamente es un poco grande pero no tanto como algunos otros, y me parece agradable a la vista, en general estoy muy satisfecho con la compra, lo recomiendo para hacer ejercicio y llevar tus tiempos .

Stopped working after two months

Looks good when worn. The compass is a tad loose but I don't use it so it's alright. My only gripe with it is the lack of documentation. Changing the day was tricky and took me a while to figure out. Still giving it a 5-star rating because it looks grand for a 3k watch. EDIT It stopped working after two months and I barely used it. Very disappointing.

The dark display

The watch is fine. I haven't tested all its functions (or the few it has). I have, however, read a few reviews where people complain about the display. I've posted some pictures to make my point more clearly. The darker picture, which shows a ho-hum quality of display took me quite some time to take, because the display is tough to see clearly so that required picking the right angle. The clearer one was shot under a bright light. These watches are this way either to preserve a certain dark, "stealth," look and also, perhaps, for cost cutting purposes. If you're gonna buy the watch understand the display is visible, but not as clearly visible as a watch with a grey background. You will be able to tell the time by raising the watch, perhaps higher than you would with another piece , or using the light (the light makes a difference at night, but not in a room that's illuminated). I gave it 4 stars because I like the watch, I knew all this going in, but would not mind if the display was more easily legible.
