Great result for a 1st time DIY'er

I have very little experience as a do-it-yourselfer working with wood. None-the-less, I got a GREAT result with this. Since you buy all the wood youself to put this kit together, this means you can custom design and build this to your exact needs and specifications - up to the maximums specified by 2x4Basics. This is a HUGE advantage. In my case a little careful forethought and time with a tape measure revealed that I could fit a 7' x about 25" workbench neatly into a space between 2 poles next to my basement stairs. This is a nice trick as my basement space is very limited. While I was waiting for the delivery of my kit, I visited the 2x4Basics website and downloaded the instructions to peruse. While these are only pictures, with careful examination most assembly steps become clear. I did encounter a few pitfalls, however. TABLE 1) The total dimention the depth of the workbench is the lenght of the front-to-back side pieces PLUS the width of the front and back 2x4's (side-to-side). In my case my side pieces were 24", but my total front-to-back depth wound up being 27". 2) The 23/32" AC plywood that I purchased for the table top (7' x 27") was slightly warped. Therefore I bought #6 x 1-1/4 Galvanized Deck Screws to hold down the edges of the table top. I put them in at every 1 foot, and a little pressure with my electic drill/screwdriver resulted in these being nicely countersunk for a flat, smooth table surface. 3) I wanted to be able to put large items underneath the table, for example, my cordless electric drill & saw set case. Therefore I OMITTED the bottom front 2x4 and both of the bottom shelves under the table. 4) This meant the that lowest 2 side pieces (front-to-back) needed to be an ADDITIONAL 1-1/2" (width of the back 2x4). In my case this meant instead of 24" (top 2 side pieces), the bottom side pieces were 25-1/2". 5) With 3 back pieces, 6 side pieces, one front piece and a 83-1/2" diagonal, plus the 23/32" AC plywood table top (7' x 27"), the table is as strudy as a ROCK. SHELVES 6) It took me a while to relize that the bottom 2 shelves have 2 full lenght and 2 shorter 2x4's to accommodate the 4 shelving uprights. These are 6-7/16" shorter, in my case, 6'5-9/16" long instead of 7'. 7) A number of the screws that are driven into the shelf kit pieces require getting your Phillips bit driver into small spaces. A BIT EXTENSION is almost certain to be necessary. 8) I made my total shelf height 31-1/2" above the top of the table (36"). I did this after trying several experiements with taller dimentions, but felt that I needed to be able to clearly see and reach what would be on the top shelf (I'm 5'10" tall). I also took into account the height of the ceiling. 31-1/2" seemed to the the maximum height that would work well with all of these considerations. 9) In my case I wanted my selves to accomodate small items that could fall in between the 1/2" gaps in the 2x4's. I therefore purchased 3 cut sheets of 1/8" Masonite Preswood as a hard shelf liner surface (7" wide x 16" deep). 2 of these (for the lower shelves) had to have additional cutouts at each of the corners to allow for the shelving uprights. After much trial and error, the dimentions of these 8 cutouts wound up being 3-3/8" wide (7' width side) x 4-1/8" deep (front-to-back side). Only a good lumber yard with the right tools (NOT just a table saw) can do this properly for you. 10) I nailed down the Masonite liners with 5/8" x #18 Wire Brads, spaced at each 1 foot. This small nail size allowed for the Masonite to be held firmly flat, while providing for negligible disruption of the flat shelf surface. GENERAL 11) If you're like me, you don't have the tools or experience to cut your own materials. You can have the lumberyard do it all for you. This requires, however, careful forethought and a detailed Bill of Materials. In my case, my revised, corrected Bill of Materials was: 2x4Basics #90164 Workbench and Shelving Kit Project 7' (wide) x 27" (deep [front-to-back]) workbench BILL OF MATERIALS v.4 TABLE 1A - Table surface - 7' wide x 27" deep x 23/32" thick (AC plywood) x 1 1B - Front & back - 1-1/2 x 3-1/2 x 7' long (no bottom front) x 5 1C - Sides - 1-1/2 x 3-1/2 x 24" long (top & middle) x 4 1C - Sides - 1-1/2 x 3-1/2 x 25-1/2" long (bottoms) x 2 1D - Diagonal - 1-1/2 x 3-1/2 x 83-1/2" long x 1 SHELVES 2A - Top shelf - 1-1/2 x 3-1/2 x 7' long (wide) x 4 2B - Bottom shelves - 1-1/2 x 3-1/2 x 7' long (wide) x 4 2B - Bottom shelves - 1-1/2 x 3-1/2 x 6'5-9/16" long (minus 6-7/16") x 4 2C - Uprights - 1-1/2 x 3-1/2 x 31-1/2" long (tall) x 4 2D - Upper shelf surface - 1/8" Masonite Temp. Preswood 7' long (wide) x 16" deep w/4 cutouts @corners 3-3/8" wide x 4-1/8" deep x 2 HARDWARE #6 x 1-14" Phillips Galvanized Deck Screws - 1 box #18 x 5/8" Wire Brads - 1 box In my case the total for my materials was slightly over $135. The result far exceeded my expectations. While most of the steps can be done alone, a couple are MUCH EASiER with one additional person to help you, briefly. I am just delighted with the results, some difficulty in assembly notwithstanding.

Basic bench

It's ok for what it is, I bought two. You can make a decent tabletop bench but you cant change shelving height or really make a cabinet front with drawers. I'm not sure how the legs will hold up over time, be careful moving them. With the cost of lumber plus the kit, it is cheaper to just by lumber and build from scratch.

Flexible in more ways that one

I read the reviews for this and looked at other similar kits and I'm glad that I went with this one. At first it seems like a kit that is just some plastic legs is kind of silly, but having built the thing I think this is a way better product than some of the other kits I've seen for the same reasons that other reviewers say. I learned a lot building this. Chiefly is that you can't rely on squares to be square when it comes to wood. Even buying slightly higher grade wood for the shelf and work surface, there was still nearly an inch variation in what 24" is supposed to be. It is impossible to cut a perfectly square 2x4 without a miter saw (and I just have a skilsaw). Even if I had a miter saw, wood isn't straight. So the combination of all those imperfections would have made any kit (or any homemade design) that required me to also cut the legs would have been WAY harder to get a good finished product that didn't wobble or anything. Hence my headline. The resin is surprisingly flexible while still being very strong. I could bend/twist the legs enough so that everything actually went together tightly. There are still gaps in some spots, but much less bad than if I had cut the legs myself. It definitely came together in a quite sturdy way. I was impressed. It is also flexible in the design. I actually added a few more bits than in the picture I took, but there's really a lot of different ways you could build the bench with this kit. Whatever size you want really. I deviated from the sample plans that came with it in dimensions and it was still a good result. I think you could really get creative if you wanted to. I only have two complaints. One which I saw in the reviews: The wood screws that come with it are crappy. A few of them broke on me when tightening. They also don't want to back out of the holes after the break because they aren't threaded all the way (which is typical of a wood screw but makes it so they just spin instead of coming out). It also didn't come with enough extra screws to actually attach the shelves or table top - only the exact number to affix the 2x4s. So, fortunately I had a handful of deck screws that let me finish it, then went and bought some more for the added supports I put under the shelf for more stability. If the thing came with more and better screws it would be even easier. My only other complaint is that it would have been really nice, for the L-shape design, for there to be a sort of reverse leg in the kit for the inside of the L. I ended up adding a 2x4 leg there for extra stability as I'll be putting weight/force on that area. This was not hard to do, but it just doesn't really match the rest of the legs. I would give it a 4.5 stars if I could. If you want to build your own bench I really think this is your best bet if you're not a very experienced woodworker with lots of tools. Aside from these two minor complaints it was great. Now, the cost of wood these days is another thing entirely. It costs me $250 in wood to finish the bench. Still cheaper than buying furniture but damn.

Nice kit!

This kit makes it really easy to make a workbench. It's astonishing that I paid $57 for this in 2016 and it more than doubled since! I don't understand.... Even with inflation how this has more than doubled in price! I don't see how they can justify asking $117 for pieces of plastic. Don't get me wrong, it's a great product! I just don't understand the price... ????‍♂️

Excellent work bench.

You can build a workbench to virtually any size you want. Easy to put together, lots of advice and instructions either provided or on you can find on you tube. You could probably build a workbench cheaper, but this was easy and quick and fun to do. It does look very good when finished.

This 2X4 Basic kit is great !! easy to work with and you even get all the screws lol... You can build any size you like but I chose to make a 24" X 60" with double top shelf and peg board rear and it all worked out great , I would buy another kit for sure and the price was right at $99.00

Exactly what I needed

I bought this to use as a workbench in my shop. I had a great afternoon with my son constructing this. Very easy to assemble. If I'm going to nitpick a bit - the instructions were in very fine print. It was difficult to read parts of it. The bonus was that it was a pretty straight-forward build - we figured it out.

Better than expected

It's more solid than I expected. Could have made the bench without it, but they look cool and that's what matters Great product!!! Just assembled my second one, awesome fun build.

Excelente producto y a muy buen precio. Sin embargo no nos fue nada facil encontrar las madera deacuerdo a las especificaciones del instructivo. Lo ideal es irse directo a una madereria. Nos gusto mucho que uno le el ancho que requiera.
